Being nearly fed to a giant alien spider by her supposed fiancé had left Donna wary, to say the least, and she’d written off that aspect of her life the instant she’d decided to find the Doctor.
And then came the library.
This is an interesting take on Donna’s part in SitL/FotD. It always seemed kind of out-of-character to me, but this explanation makes it better.
“She’s happy, Donna,” he insists, conviction in his voice, the smile gone from his face. “She doesn’t need me.”
He sounds desperate, as though Donna’s belief in Rose’s happiness is absolutely imperative to the functioning of the universe. Donna wonders if they’re still talking about Rose.
Aww, this is the part that really got me, because it’s true. I think telling himself that Rose was happy, no matter how much he might know that to be a lie, was the only way he could deal at all. :(
