I definitely didn't know they were a Four thing when I first saw Sound of Drums, so I was just like "... LIRL ALRIGHT" and accepted it as awesome. Now of course I realize it is, in fact, extra-awesome.
Aside from the giant question mark that is Eleven's characterisation, the fact that he's talking to 12-year-old Rose made it even more difficult because... i don't know, people speak differently to kids, and presumably that is even more true if the kid is the younger version of a woman they used to be in love with. LIRL
Also, jazzhands are hard to write without being like "and then he flailed his hands around".
