I just wanted to make a quick comment on your use of French. James, adressing himself to Lily ( a girl ) would say "ma cherie" not "mon cheri" because the latter is only used for guys. also "bonne fete" is used to celebrate a person whose name is the same as a saint celebrated on some special day. for example if your name is Lea, then people say "bonne fete" to you on March 23rd. If your name's Marina, then the same happens on July 20th. You'd say "joyeux anniversaire" or "bon anniversaire".

I'm sorry if you know all this and did this on purpose, but being French, I couldn't help but comment on it. Otherwise good opening chapter, very interesting. I like how you present Lily and Petunia's relationship. I'll go off and read some more in fact.
